National Bike Month

(c) Cascade Bicycle ClubMay is National Bike Month and you can celebrate by getting on a bike.  For those who are more goal oriented, you can also celebrate by partticipating in the Group Health Commute Challenge.  This is a great way to begin commuting to work by bicycle.  You can participate in this month-long event by signing up either as an individual or forming teams.

I have been running a team at work for the past 5 years and it has been a great way to meet new people and to encourage new riders to try commuting by bike.

For those of you who are training for the STP or even if you aren’t! Get some friends together and form a team. I’ve been doing this for the past five or six years and it’s always fun. Cascade bike club keeps a website where you keep track of your rides – miles and number of rides. Compete with your team against other teams, or just keep track to see how you do. Commuting generates a lot of fun stories. Here’s one:
The wind was blowing like crazy while I was biking home. I battled a head-wind all the way up to Renton when I finally spotted my prey – a lone cyclist..and in a Boeing t-shirt…even better! I slowly closed the gap – peddling a little faster, shifting, braking…closer…closer…then I latched onto his wheel. He pulled me down the street a ways, then looked behind and said, “Hey – you’re cheating!” I mumbled something about it being a windy day and then sprinted off.
